Wonderful, awful (?) Christmas

Writer Jessica is one of the founders of My Training Journey

The last month of the year makes many people stop and think about everything they have accomplished and which of last year's promises have fallen by the wayside. I often find that the conversation easily turns to the things that didn't happen.

We are disappointed in ourselves, even though in reality we have achieved a great deal.

What if this year's promise is that we're more forgiving? What if this time the promise is genuinely realistic?

What to do when the Christmas rush is stressing you out?

Personally, I have one very simple resolution for next year: I will devote one whole day just to myself. Preferably in the forest or by the sea.

On that day, I will calm my mind and body. I will sleep, exercise, eat well, and just be — without any obligations. A pretty realistic promise, right?

December is also the month when Christmas is approaching and many people are running around like headless chickens. We have to see friends and relatives, there are Christmas parties, deadlines, and at the same time, our daily routines are disrupted. But does it really make sense to cram everything into one month and be completely exhausted just when the Christmas peace should begin?

Cortisol levels are through the roof, you grind your teeth at night, and your neck and shoulders are so stiff that your head hurts and your hands go numb. Sound familiar? What can help?

Exercise. In any form whatsoever.

And I'm not necessarily talking about intense workouts, but rather about getting your body moving. A leisurely walk can work wonders. Here in southern Finland, the weather has been so mild that cycling is also a great option – often without even needing studded tires. Just put on your helmet and off you go. Outdoor gyms are still very accessible if you feel like being outside.

If there is snow, put on your skis and hit the trails – even if it means queuing up with others at the snow cannon track and chatting with your fellow exercisers. Snowshoeing, downhill skiing, swimming pools as long as they are open... And for the bravest, ice swimming.

If you don't feel like thinking or planning right now, our Easy program offers ready-made instructions and videos. It is especially suitable for those who have limited time but want to exercise and take care of themselves – even in December.

Perhaps the most important promise this Christmas is not to do more, but to be a little better.
